"Why aren't we hitting enough signups?"
Like a lot of creators, we too wanted to believe in the "build and they'll come" mantra.
It's a rather common journey for founders, entrepreneurs and product managers to end up building finished products, often backed by market research - only to find poor traction. A painful catch 22, where you cannot truly test the market until after you've launched.
Clearly not an easy problem to solve as it happens to both the novice and seasoned alike.
And when that happens, the blame falls mostly on marketing. Perhaps a catchy slogan, a few growth hacks could save the day. At this point, marketing consultants would usually tell you:
"Why not spend more marketing dollars?"
In our experience working with early stage companies, just throwing money at the problem does not make it go away. Unless you're lucky, finding your customer niche and the right channel is difficult because it usually involves a lot of explorations, each of which is expensive if done exhaustively. And it's easy to lose a lot of money very quickly in marketing campaigns without enough ROI.
However the bigger reason it does not work is that it's a symptomatic fix without addressing the underlying issue - lack of a validation mindset right from inception.
Adopt a validation mindset
Most companies don't really validate product-market fit the right way. Even when they do, they might inadvertently interpret the results to fit their narrative. Here is a real example where a survey question might generate different results when framed like this
Ask questions the right way
For instance, consider the following two questions:
Q. How often would you hit the gym next year?
Never
Once a week
Twice or more
How often have you been hitting the gym this year?
Never
Once a week
Twice or more
Not only does the first question make it hard on the participants because it forces them to think and predict which makes it exhausting, it's also far less effective. On the other hand, the second question gets you much more realistic and reliable data.
Simple and easy-to-implement validation tactics when adopted and ingrained in your company culture have several benefits. It reduces analysis paralysis within the team, helps define your MVP features, create more accurate projections, raise funds and overall reach the market faster.
However, incorporating a smart validation based marketing strategy is tricky because marketing is multi-disciplinary. It needs buy-ins from all departments. Not to mention marketing workflows are full of cross functional dependencies too.
So this is what we have came up with.
